The Georgian Medical Postgraduate Foundation was started in the 1990s for training young physicians to pass at the US Medical Licensing Examination. The first batch of students also successfully passed the medical residency programs in the US. Members of the foundation were provided with all necessary aids, textbooks and the like, but proper training became the call of the day. There was a need for a institute of higher medical education and this is when academicians David Tvildiani and Dr. Dimitri Tvildiani came together to bring to life the AIETI Medical School. It was renamed as the David Tvildiani University in 2011. It happened to be one of the country’s first non-governmental medical universities.
The David Tvildiani Medical University has one faculty - the Faculty of General Medicine. The faculty offers a six year long course on General Medicine and the degree awarded is M.D., equivalent to M.B.B.S in India. The course is divided into three stages and these are:
There are two semesters per year and a final exam is conducted to test the skill of the students in their respective subjects. On successful completion of the course, the student will receive the qualification of a General Practitioner. The language of instruction is English and textbooks used are compatible with an international standard, at par with the kind followed in the U.S.A. Computer based learning methods, audio and video aids from the Association of American Physicians and a medical library which was created by U.S.A for the Georgian Foundation for Physician Specialization are all put to use.
The School of Public Health was formed under the David Tvildiani Medical University in the year 2009. Subjects taught here include environmental health, biostatistics, occupational health, health systems, and nutrition among others.
Students need to achieve an 80% in aggregate in their school finals for being selected as candidates into the David Tvildiani Medical University. Applicants also need to clear an entrance exam. The average fee per year for undergraduate courses is around USD 1,000-USD 2,500 for local students and USD 2,500-USD 5,000 for international students. The expense for living and hostel fees are extra. Students scoring high in their exams are eligible for a discount on the tuition fee. Application forms are available online, on the institutions website.
The approximate number of students who enter the course every year is approximately between 250 and 500 and the number of teaching staff is something around 50 to 100.
