The Irkutsk State Medical University was founded in the year 1919 with the Eastern Department where the languages of Chinese, Mongolian, Japanese, Sanskrit, Tibetan were taught. The Physics and Mathematics department were also started along with this. It was in the following year that the medical faculty became independent. Currently the university has 19 faculties and over 18,000 students. The university is highly revered for its facilities for higher studies and research, training, laboratories and observatories. The buildings of the university are also significant from the point of view of archaeology since most of these were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. The university is the oldest higher educational institution in the Far East and Eastern Siberia.
The senior students of all the faculties have the scope to take up specialised courses and take part in internships in scientific research institutes under ISU and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. They can also practice practical work in the university laboratories. The faculty of the university has been highly qualified for ages and they have included many famous scientists, professors, learned men and women.
International students wanting to get admission to this prestigious university have to appear for a test which will test their skills in Russian as a Foreign Language. They will also have a round of personal interview for which they should be prepared to answer questions from Biology and Chemistry.
The university has hostels of its own where rooms are available on twin and triple sharing basis. Other facilities include basketball courts, volleyball team, tennis court, etc. Hostel dwellers will also be able to avail internet services.
