About Medical University of Gdansk
The Medical University of Gdansk is located in the North Poland, a port city of Europe. It was established in October 1945 as a medical department of medicine primarily to teach and research medical and science. It eventually became a separate institution in 1984. Initially, the university started its medical department and later on added clinical courses, pre-clinical courses in various faculties like Faculty of Health Sciences, Subfaculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Stomatology, Faculty of Biotechnology, and pharmaceutical faculty in the course. It is the biggest restorative college in northern Poland. Since 1945, the Medical University of Gdansk known as MUG also has grown in both size and strength to include a large number of research centers, clinics and campus facilities with a rich diversity of programme options.
The Medical University of Gdansk is headed by Prof. Marcin Gruchała. Every year many students from foreign countries like Sweden, Norway, India, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Canada, UK, USA, Iraq, Germany, and Spain enroll themselves in the courses offered in the University. These students constitute almost 16% of the total student strength of the university.

Faculties in Medical University of Gdansk
The university offers medical courses available in the English language along with preparatory courses.
Academically, the University is structured into four faculties-

Programs offered in Medical University of Gdansk
- Faculty of Medicine
The faculty of medicine has 77 Departments and Clinics and employs 614 teachers to carry out didactic tasks. It offers programmes like :
- medical (homogenous 6-year MSc studies)
- medical stomatological (homogenous 5-year MSc studies)
- dental techniques (3-year 1st degree BSc studies).
In University Clinical Centre and at some selected teaching hospitals in Gdańsk, students are provided hands-on clinical training. There is a Laboratory Medicine Centre, which was opened in 2010, and a clinical hospital inaugurated in March 2012. Along with the hospital, an Invasive Medicine Centre was also opened which houses mostly surgical clinics. The students practice specialized diagnostics and treatment in the Departments and Clinics of the Faculty.
Faculty of Pharmacy with Sub faculty of Laboratory Medicine
The Faculty of Pharmacy and the Subfaculty of Laboratory Medicine is a combined unit of both faculties since 2001. The Faculty of Pharmacy with Subfaculty of Laboratory Medicine offers masters of science in pharmacy and laboratory analytics to students ensuring a high quality and effective education. It has 16 Departments and Labs, Library, Medicinal Plant Garden, Postgraduate Education Center. It also has a Training Pharmacy – one of the most modern facilities in Poland for training and applying the principles of patient care by pharmacists and their role in the healthcare system. The courses offered are :
- 6 year MD program
- 5 year Master of Pharmacy program
The faculty provides specialty training in retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy and industrial pharmacy to the students. It also offers Doctoral Degree in Pharmaceutical science to the students.
Faculty of Health Sciences with Sub faculty of Nursing and Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine
The Medical University of Gdańsk created the Faculty of Health Sciences in the year 2006.
The major programmes offered in health sciences are nursing, obstetrics, physiotherapy, medical rescue service, electro radiology, and latest added dietetics and public health as well.
The Nursing, obstetrics, physiotherapy and public health programs are both offered as

There are 8 Institutes, educational facilities of the Nursing department, clinics alongside the units of the Interdepartmental Institute of Maritime and Tropical Medicine.
The Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology of the University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk
The University of Gdańsk and the Medical University of Gdańsk together formed a joined unit in 1993 known as Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology. This unit offers three programmes in biotechnology:
- 3-year BSc studies,
- 2-year MSc studies and
- 4-year Ph.D. studies
Currently, it has 122 prospective students in Bachelors of Science, 76 students in Masters of Science and 45 Ph.D. candidates.
The students are encouraged to take participate in the international exchange program called Socrates/Erasmus Programme. The University of Perugia also offers a 3-year vocational studies programme “Job Creation Oriented Biotechnology Diploma” under the international exchange program.
The laboratories provide to students for practical training are well equipped with modern facilities, including confocal microscopes, DNA sequencers, fermenters, devices for breeding and cryopreservation of bacterial, plant and animal cells, gel documentation systems and other modern equipment.
MUG also offers different courses like Premedical Course, Pre-Health Course, solution specialist Programme, dietetics Programme and the Ph. D. Programmes, which are taught completely In English.
Accreditation and Awards
The university has stood out among the various universities all over the globe. The university has received various awards and accreditation for its programmes and students.
The State Accreditation Committee accredited the Intercollegiate Faculty of Biotechnology in the year 2005 and was accredited by the University Accreditation Committee in the year 2002 and 2007.
The faculty of Biotechnology has been ranked in the first place by Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The university has been ranked as one of the three best institutes offering a course in Biotechnology.
For the education electro cardiologists, the Faculty of Health Sciences of the university has been cooperating with the Nursing Department of Florida University in Gainesville (USA), the University of Karlskrona (Sweden) and the HENRE network. They also cooperated to work on a physiotherapy Swiss centers.
- The Faculty of Health Sciences is also developing a building for teaching and scientific research.
- Faculty of Pharmacy has been accreditated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Poland to conduct specialty training in retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and industrial pharmacy.
- The Faculty of Pharmacy has been recognized by the Polish government in 2012 as a Leading National Research Centre (KNOW) in the field of medicine and health sciences.
- The faculty of Pharmacy has been recognized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education because of its effective scientific achievements and known as the leader among the nine faculties of pharmacy in Poland
- The Medical University of Gdansk is the only institution with the A+ category in science achievements throughout the Polish coast.
- The students of the Faculty of Medicine individually or as part of student scientific clubs earned the Red Rose Award
- The clinic of Pediatrics, Hematology, and Oncology won in the Best Student Scientific Circle category.
